CHAPTER FOUR

Nixie raced down the stairs from Brett’s office, taking them two at a time.

Every person in the restaurant, including Mr. Mystery, had seen her having sex with Brett in his upstairs office.

“Nixie! Wait!” Brett called, but she ignored him. Instead, she bolted down the hallway and exited through the back door, where orders of oysters, delicate cuts of meat, just-picked veggies, wine, and other foodstuffs were delivered regularly.

Outside, the sun shone like a beacon trained on her shame. Everyone saw Brett go down on me through the windows of his headquarters. I can never come back here. Never. I’ve officially quit as of today.

She scurried past the front of the restaurant, her head down, glancing through the window to make sure no one saw her.

Most of the patrons still trained their gazes overhead...at the movie playing on the windows of Brett’s office.

Movies! She whacked her forehead with her palm. Of course. Every Sunday is movie day at Badass Divine. A continuous stream of old movies plays without sound. How could I forget?

As soon as she passed the restaurant and was well out of sight, she allowed her feet to cease and took a few deep breaths to calm herself. I’m such an idiot. Brett’s going to think all I do is run.

At the sound of pounding footsteps, she whirled in their direction.

Brett ran toward her, looking every bit the athletic god, dressed by Armani, Cavalli, or Dolce and Gabbana. By the time he reached her, embarrassment had replaced the blood in her bloodstream, tying her tongue in knots.

“What happened?” he said, barely breathless from his sprint.

“I...you...” Tears pricked at her eyes. “I’m such an idiot. I saw everyone’s eyes trained upstairs, and I thought they were looking at you and me.” Her gaze darted around for a place to hide.

“Do you honestly think so little of me that you assumed I’d want to share that moment with the world?” He brushed a lock of hair from her eyes.

The gesture touched her. “I don’t know what to think. I barely know you.” She rubbed her face against his fingertips.

“Sweet Nixie,” he said, placing his hands on her shoulders. “I’m afraid I’ve frightened you with my impulsiveness. I’ve longed to do that since the day I first lay eyes on you.”

“You’re just saying that,” she said, wrapping her arms around him.

He kissed the top of her head. “No,” he murmured. “I’m not just saying that.”

For a few moments, they simply stood on the sidewalk, arms embracing one another, as the traffic and pedestrians whizzed all around them. Finally, Brett eased back. “Go home. Take the rest of the day off with my apologies. I shouldn’t have acted so foolishly to drag you upstairs like a caveman and have my way with you. I have better manners than that.”

“It was pretty hot,” she said, canting her head to the side. She coiled a lock of her long raven-black hair around her fingers and looked up at him through her lashes.

“Sweet Nixie,” he said again.
